Founded in 1899, Somerville House is the leading Presbyterian and Uniting Day and Boarding School for Girls’ learning and leadership development, providing empowering education for girls from Pre-Prep to Year 12 and co-educational Pre-Prep. Boarding is offered to girls from Years 6 to 12.
Located in South Brisbane in an enviable position overlooking the Brisbane city skyline, Somerville House focuses on girls’ education, development and wellbeing. Our schools provides a personalised learning experience in an environment where girls can be fearless leaders of change. With us, they can develop confidence, pursue excellence and find their purpose.
The Motto of Somerville House, Honour Before Honours, is a simple yet meaningful statement that has stood the test of time. A Somerville girl is shaped by honour and understands her behaviour and achievements are more important than the applause of a crowd.
The school’s academic program is underpinned by the unique Curriculum Framework, fostering a strong learning community. Four key principles provide the foundation for all teaching and learning: engagement, excellence, empowerment and diversity.
With Christian values at its core, the school’s curriculum ensures each student from Pre-Prep to Year 12 is provided with rich opportunities for rigorous, independent learning and developing critical, creative thinking. The school’s curriculum encourages students to continually further their expertise as learners and strive for standards of excellence. Teachers optimise opportunities to engage students with emerging digital technologies and provide a broad range of educational activities to consolidate and extend classroom learning to meet individual student needs.
Our caring teachers and distinctive pedagogical approach deliver a quality, balanced education that personalises every student’s learning requirements. It is an inspiring education designed to fuel their passions, challenge their performance, exceed their expectations and enable each girl to realise her individual promise.
Research shows that girls have better access to leadership opportunities, achieve greater academic success, and are more confident and assertive in single-sex environments. We believe the complete development should include the nurturing of life balance, which is why we offer a diverse range of co-curricular activities that build character, encourage collaboration and confidence, and allow our girls to create their own stories.
Students at Somerville House enjoy extensive facilities designed to support their diverse range of passions, as well as the broad curriculum and co-curricular programs on offer.
The current facilities are a blend of heritage-listed buildings preserved for future generations and state-of-the-art, contemporary, purpose-designed buildings, classrooms, and sporting precincts to provide for the needs of 21st-century learning.
