The policies at Whyalla High School are strictly enforced to maintain the safety and wellbeing of every student and staff member at the site and are in accordance to the South Australian Department for Education policies and procedures. They are highlighted in this guide to assist parents and caregivers to communicate with their child/ren about these expectations. The programs and camps offered at Whyalla High School are to enrich your child’s middle schooling experience and assist with building relationships with the other students and staff at the school. The middle school model at Whyalla High School provides students in Years 8-10 with a deep and personalised connection with core subjects (Care Group, English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Career Development and Wellbeing), supplemented by a wide range of experiential and optional subjects that ensure complete engagement with the Australian Curriculum and/or the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). We aim to provide opportunities for every child to achieve success and explore personal strengths through a diverse curriculum and various extra-curricular activities. The curriculum sets out the core knowledge, understanding, skills and general capabilities important for all Australian students. It describes the learning entitlement of students as a foundation for their future learning, growth and active participation in the Australian community. It makes clear what all young Australians should learn as they progress through schooling. It is the foundation for high quality teaching to meet the needs of all Australian students. The general capabilities include literacy, numeracy, information technology, critical and creative thinking, personal and social competence, moral and ethical behaviours and intercultural understandings. Cross Curriculum Perspectives focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia and Sustainability. Topics within each learning area are designed to enhance the curriculum and develop expert learners through authentic personalisation and connection for all learners.
