The Kilmore International School: Australia’s specialist IB School.

The Kilmore International School (TKIS) was one of the first schools in Australia to introduce the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme in 1989 and is now considered by many to be Australia’s specialist IB School.

The IB Diploma Programme is complex and demanding and is often not well understood but can best be summarised as a first-class university preparation program with absolute credibility. It is offered over two years (in Years 11 and 12) and is recognised for university admission by institutions worldwide.

The IB can only be offered in schools which have been individually assessed and approved by the IBO. There are now over 3500 member-schools in over 140 different countries including about 150 IB schools in Australia. Schools usually offer the IB in conjunction with their local program (such as the VCE in Victoria, the HSC in NSW etc).  TKIS is unique in Australia in preparing all students for the full IB Diploma.

Broadly speaking, students are required to select six subjects from separate groups to meet the requirements for the IB Diploma, including: languages (a first language and a second language); sciences; humanities; mathematics; and fine arts. In addition to the above, all students are required to submit an extended essay or mini-thesis of approximately 4,000 words, to follow a course in the Theory of Knowledge, and to spend the equivalent of approximately three hours per week throughout the two year program engaged in ‘CAS’ (creativity, action and service).

In recent years, TKIS students have achieved outstanding academic results. In 2017, 26 per cent of our graduates were in the top five per cent and 57 per cent were placed in the top 10 per cent of Australian students. Graduates have been offered places at leading universities in Australia and other parts of the world including eight full scholarships.

Many TKIS teachers are extensively trained within the IB Diploma Programme with over half holding IB examiner status. With a wide range of IB subjects on offer and a variety of first and second languages, there’s no doubt that TKIS is Australia’s specialist IB school.
