Junior School at Overnewton Anglican Community College
The Junior School at Overnewton caters for students in the early years of school, from Prep to Year 4, and provides a nurturing and caring environment in which children develop socially, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually.
The Junior School caters for individuals by providing a sequential approach to learning. Students’ intellectual and emotional development is fostered by a varied and extensive education program.
Junior School curriculum — laying the foundations
The Junior School curriculum provides quality teaching programs that focus on developing the fundamental knowledge, skills and behaviour in literacy and numeracy, together with opportunities for the development of physical, creative, and information and communications technology (ICT) skills.
There is a focus on seven general capabilities (literacy, numeracy, information and communications technology, critical and creative thinking, ethical behaviour, personal and social competence, and intercultural understanding) and three cross-curriculum priorities (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia, and Sustainability).
Learning in the Junior School is underpinned by the belief that students learn best when they are at the centre of their own learning. Inquiry-based learning is a learning process through questions generated from the interests, curiosities, and perspectives and experiences of the learner. When investigations grow from the students’ own questions, curiosities and experiences, learning is an organic and motivating process that is intrinsically enjoyable.
Specialist subjects in the Junior School include physical education, performing arts, visual arts and library for all year levels, as well as the Perceptual Motor Program for Prep and Year 1, Mandarin from Prep and Indonesian for Years 3and 4.

Families also form an integral part of the learning experience, with all parents being actively involved in college life by participating in the Family Involvement Program whereby they contribute 12 hours of service to the college every term.
