Melbourne Girls Grammar

Melbourne Girls Grammar’s Junior Years Program (Prep – Year 4) inspires enthusiastic, inquisitive and creative thinkers.

The Junior Years Program is a time where girls from Prep – Year 4 channel their curiosity for the world through an academic curriculum that equips them with fundamental life skills. Our purpose is to guide your daughter on this path and encourage her to ask questions about what she is learning to develop leadership and team building skills, as well as social, personal and cultural awareness.

Our Junior Years Program is located at our newly renovated Morris Hall campus. The environment is architecturally designed to create a place of enchantment that promotes wonder, possibility and challenge for students of the 21st century. It is a beautiful and welcoming place for our girls and their families.

Our learning studios are inspired by our commitment to make learning visible. Our flexible spaces enable our girls to collaborate and create, to extend what is possible in the flow of a day. Each of our studios promote a sense of community and belonging. Learning studios are designed to take advantage of natural light, provide comfortable gathering spaces, support personalised learning, and integrate a range of learning technologies. Our girls share these beautiful, light filled spaces with a team of teachers who are all dedicated to ensure that they have everything they need to be inspired to achieve amazing things. The environment at Morris Hall supports and promotes a deep respect for each other and for our environment.

At our Morris Hall campus, academic learning is integrated with social development, positive relationships and an understanding of personal responsibility. Our curriculum is rich and diverse with a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy, developing fundamental skills for life. Specialist teachers provide creative and enriching learning experiences in music, the arts, Italian, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), physical performance and health education and information literacy. Outside, the girls explore, play and imagine. From the sustainable Kitchen Garden to our Adventure Playground, Peaceful Patio and Imagination Zone, we ensure our spaces engage our girls with all five senses.

The Junior Years is a time where girls are offered opportunities and experiences that invite them to explore, wonder and discover the world around them, so they may uncover their passions and pursue these interests within a secure and positive environment. We believe our learning experiences allow our girls’ natural abilities to flourish and stimulate enthusiastic, inquisitive and creative thinkers.

Message from the Principal

Melbourne Girls Grammar has a clear vision for the education of our contemporary students. We are committed to preparing them to navigate their future with confidence, resourcefulness, and the ability to respond to complex challenges. Our girls have the capacity to be the positive influence in the many life contexts they will experience beyond our red brick walls.

Student Profile

Name: Emma

Year Level: Year 11

Favourite Subject: Biology

Emma started at Melbourne Girls Grammar as a boarder in Year 9 and, now in Year 11, has made the most of every opportunity at the School.

“Choosing to board is one of the biggest decisions I have made in my life,” says Emma. “My choice to board was partly because it would allow me to leave home and experience independence in a safe environment. I have become more confident in many ways. There are so many opportunities to try new things and meet inspirational people through different school programs, and to meet girls from diverse backgrounds and different cultures. We are always surrounded by passionate and driven students.”

Emma’s favourite subjects include biology and drama. With biology, Emma enjoys the practical aspect, with many excursions to the zoo, the aquarium and the Royal Botanic Gardens (directly opposite the school) to observe what the class is learning about in the real world. “We go outside the spectrum of textbook learning and discuss real world examples,” says Emma. The utilisation of technology and the world-class facilities and equipment also enhance the learning experience. Drama also allows Emma to use her artistic and creative side and she says, “I find the process of creating purely from stimulus very interesting and fun. We have very active discussions where we all contribute and can share personal stories which we can then incorporate into performances.”

Emma is also very involved in co-curricular activities and takes part in the senior choir, Merton Chamber Voices, Melbourne Girls Grammar and Melbourne Grammar School plays, tennis and debating, and the new music theatre group, an initiative by Emma and a peer. Emma says that she has become passionate about public speaking, and says that, “it gives me greater self-confidence and increased confidence in asserting my own opinion.”
