Boarding at Melbourne Girls Grammar School

Melbourne Girls Grammar (MGGS) has a proud tradition of boarding stretching back over 100 years. The Boarding House’s diverse program for girls in Years 7 – 12 is located at the School’s Merton Hall Campus.

One of the great strengths of our Boarding House is the quality and depth of the relationships built between the School, families and girls. Our girls truly value the opportunity to learn about themselves, develop their character, build relationships and become independent young women. With our boarders spanning Australia and, in many cases the globe, they bring with them a wide range of abilities, learning experiences and expectations. This diversity of experience and perspective ensures that our girls are exposed to different ways of thinking and seeing the world which builds a broader outlook on life.

Boarders attending MGGS are supported to achieve their personal best in their academic pursuits. The residence and the teachers in the day school communicate regularly. The Boarding House staff are well informed about academic progress and classroom engagement and focus. Our young and dynamic residential staff, along with our dedicated academic tutors, support the girls from transition into the School through to graduation from VCE.

The Boarding House fosters strong, capable young women who develop the skills and confidence to flourish and be their best in every possible way. At Melbourne Girls Grammar we believe an exceptional education provides not only academic skills and attributes, but also nurtures emotional and physical wellbeing. We aim to develop every girl’s capacity to be an independent and reflective learner. Our girls acquire the skills to be strong self-advocates; articulating their needs, concerns and aspirations with confidence and courage.

Situated within the city of Melbourne, our boarders have access to the many internationally recognised cultural, sporting and entertainment facilities at their doorstep. MGGS is adjacent to the Royal Botanic Garden and our girls enjoy having access to the CBD as it is a short walk along the Yarra River – or a quick tram ride – to Federation Square.

The independence attained by our girls ensures they approach their VCE studies with confidence and look with optimism to the many opportunities beyond graduation. A boarding experience at MGGS prepares our girls for life beyond school.

Message from the Principal

Melbourne Girls Grammar has a clear vision for the education of our contemporary students. We are committed to preparing them to navigate their future with confidence, resourcefulness, and the ability to respond to complex challenges. Our girls have the capacity to be the positive influence in the many life contexts they will experience beyond our red brick walls.

Catherine Misson

Student Profile

Name: Emma

Year Level: Year 11

Favourite Subject: Biology

Emma started at Melbourne Girls Grammar as a boarder in Year 9 and, now in Year 11, has made the most of every opportunity at the School.

“Choosing to board is one of the biggest decisions I have made in my life,” says Emma. “My choice to board was partly because it would allow me to leave home and experience independence in a safe environment. I have become more confident in many ways. There are so many opportunities to try new things and meet inspirational people through different school programs, and to meet girls from diverse backgrounds and different cultures. We are always surrounded by passionate and driven students.”

Emma’s favourite subjects include biology and drama. With biology, Emma enjoys the practical aspect, with many excursions to the zoo, the aquarium and the Royal Botanic Gardens (directly opposite the school) to observe what the class is learning about in the real world. “We go outside the spectrum of textbook learning and discuss real world examples,” says Emma. The utilisation of technology and the world-class facilities and equipment also enhance the learning experience. Drama also allows Emma to use her artistic and creative side and she says, “I find the process of creating purely from stimulus very interesting and fun. We have very active discussions where we all contribute and can share personal stories which we can then incorporate into performances.”

Emma is also very involved in co-curricular activities and takes part in the senior choir, Merton Chamber Voices, Melbourne Girls Grammar and Melbourne Grammar School plays, tennis and debating, and the new music theatre group, an initiative by Emma and a peer. Emma says that she has become passionate about public speaking, and says that, “it gives me greater self-confidence and increased confidence in asserting my own opinion.”
