About De La Salle College

Established in 1912, De La Salle College has a proud history as a leader in Catholic boys’ education in Melbourne. Our experience, coupled with a 21st century approach to learning and teaching, ensures that we provide a holistic education tailored to individual needs. Respect is the foundation of all relationships at our College and we promote a culture of social justice and a community of faith and excellence.

Our motto is learn, live, lead, representing our contemporary approach to all we do and the values we instil in the young men in our care.

LEARN: We are a contemporary learning community striving for excellence, innovation and creativity, engaging the individual learner in the 21st-century world.

LIVE: By embracing the breadth, opportunities and challenges of our co-curricular program, students access a rich and varied experience and develop a strong compassion for those around them.

LEAD: We recognise that today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders. That is why we develop young men who go into the world after school with the qualities of a confident leader: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skill.

Curriculum

In Years 4 to 6, focus is on literacy and numeracy, with integrated study of technology, history, geography and science, and specialised study of art and music. At Years 7 to 9, students are engaged and challenged through dynamic learning programs to develop lifelong skills such as critical thinking, teamwork and independent study. At Year 10, students choose from over 45 subjects and in Years 11 to 12 can choose the VCE, VET or VCAL pathway that suits them.
Sport and the arts are integral parts of College life and a wide range of opportunities are offered in both. Music, drama, design and technology, and art are compulsory studies in Years 7 to 8.

Co-curricular

Our extensive range of co-curricular opportunities complement classroom learning and provide a broadening of perspective for students. We offer something to interest every student, including:

  • academic programs and competitions
  • debating
  • drama productions
  • private tuition in singing and musical instruments
  • band, orchestra and ensembles
  • overseas exchanges
  • community service opportunities
  • self-defence classes
  • specialist enrichment and support programs.

Our College is also a member of the Associated Catholic Colleges’ Victorian Competition for competitive sport.

Message from the Principal

'At De La Salle College we operate on a platform of challenge and achievement for all. Every student deserves access to success and our approach emphasises the development of 21st-century skills and a personalised method where teachers know their students as not only young men, but as learners. Quality education is one of our five guiding principles; at De La Salle that means students of all backgrounds and abilities are catered for with the development of diverse and engaging programs, constructed to meet students at their point of need.

With a commitment to justice being another of our guiding principles, our students' record of service and compassion is a unique strength. Our capacity to understand and appreciate the plight of those less fortunate in communities both local and abroad translates into positive relationships and a spirit of cooperation and support for all in our school.'

Mr Peter Houlihan
