About Preshil The Margaret Lyttle Memorial School

Preshil is the oldest progressive school in Australia, focusing on the education of each individual child and the social relationships which support their development as critical and creative thinkers. It remains a deliberately small school, welcoming children into the Kindergarten at three years of age, and following them through to the completion of their secondary schooling in Year 12.

Preshil is an International Baccalaureate School, with authorisation to teach the IB Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) and IB Diploma Programme (IBDP), and acceptance as a candidate school for the Primary Years Programme (IBPYP). These IB programmes perfectly align with Preshil’s focus on intellectual challenge, inquiry and research-based learning, which accommodate individual choice and independent learning. The school continues to produce graduates who have developed the “courage to question”, to find their own voice and to become responsible and active global citizens.

The Preshil Secondary School (Blackhall Kalimna) offers the IBMYP, an intellectually vibrant curriculum which is the perfect preparation for all our students to progress to an IBDP in their final two years of school. Preshil continues to support an outstanding programme of Arts, Drama, Film and Music, with multi-age Electives focusing on extending students’ interests, building career knowledge, and innovative STEAM choices.

The Preshil approach to schooling does not use the fear of failure or the threat of punishment to motivate children. We do not demand conformity or unthinking obedience to arbitrary rules. The rapport between students is relaxed, respectful and focused on achieving outstanding learning outcomes, trust and a genuine regard for each individual.

Message from the Principal

Preshil has been at the forefront of progressive education in Victoria for over eighty years. The school remains committed to its traditional core values of respect for each individual student in the process of nurturing their creativity and helping them to find their passion and independence.

Strong social relationships form the basis of our culture and this approach to schooling is still leading the way in contemporary educational research, at a time when conventional education is becoming ever more regimented and standardized. Preshil's physical environment is distinctive, with spaces designed to enhance individuality and relationships, fostering collaborative learning and the courage to question. This means our VCE students are successful in achieving their chosen tertiary pathways.

Ms Marilyn Smith
