About Carey Baptist Grammar School

Founded in 1923, Carey Baptist Grammar School is a Christian independent coeducational school offering three-year-old Early Learning to Year 12. Carey is situated close to the Central Business District of Melbourne, within easy distance of public transport.

As one of Australia’s leading schools, Carey maintains a 50:50 gender balance, fostering the development of confidence, communication skills and self-esteem in both girls and boys. Students participate in community service; study different cultures, religions and beliefs; learn the importance of human rights; and are encouraged to respect and appreciate the world beyond their own experience.

Carey works in partnership with families to develop wise, independent, motivated young people who are inspired and equipped to create positive change. The Senior School offers both IB and VCE and fosters a dynamic and stimulating environment. Our students achieve university entrance scores that place Carey amongst the top schools in Victoria.

Recruiting and developing highly professional teaching and support staff is one of our greatest priorities. Carey is known for being innovative, progressive and leading the way in best practice teaching and learning, supporting strong academic results and personal development for each student. Carey’s philosophy of student-centred learning requires students to be active, responsible participants in their own learning, with the teacher working as a mentor, facilitator and guide.

To support the learning program, Carey is committed to providing inspiring buildings and resources. Carey recently opened the Centre for Learning and Innovation, developed on principles of contemporary education and the latest pedagogical thinking and understanding. At the heart of the building is the Information Resource Centre which, in addition to housing our extensive catalogue, offers a variety of spaces that cater for the different needs of our students. On the top of this building sits the United Nations Room which reflects Carey’s diversity, inclusivity and commitment to social justice, thus preparing our students for the rapidly changing local, national and international communities in which they live, work and serve.

Carey students are curious, aspirational and engaged global citizens. We build on their individual qualities to develop young women and men who flourish and can lead and serve with courage, compassion and intelligence.

Message from the Principal

As the father of two daughters, both now Old Carey Grammarians, I understand the hopes, questions and anxieties many parents have when considering a new school for their children. I can confidently assure you – from my own experience, and from welcoming so many new Carey families in my time as Principal – that Carey provides a friendly and inclusive community where you child will be nurtured for years to come.

At Carey, we focus on helping young people become the best they can be. We offer our girls and boys every opportunity to grow into communicative, creative, critically-thinking, curious and community-minded young adults. When Carey’s students learn how to get the best from themselves, they are able to give their best to others – their families, friends, work colleagues and the communities they serve.

I am incredibly proud of our school and the people who make up its community. Please enjoy taking the time to explore the wonderful opportunities that we can offer your child.

Student Profile

Name: Aisha Dunstan

Year Level: 12

Favourite Subject: French

I started at Carey in Year 10 and from the beginning I have felt so embraced and at ease. There is a real sense of positive culture at Carey which comes from the inclusive and diverse community.

The greatest element of Carey and being a student here is the ability to be involved in as many interests as you like and more importantly – you are encouraged to explore all of them.

Through the supportive environment Carey has provided me, I have been able to study the IB Diploma in vastly different areas that have taken my curiosity. French classes are my favorite part of the day, but not just because of the subject content; it’s the way that we are encouraged to speak out loud and to have conversations that everyone can build from together. Learning the content is one aspect but it’s the classroom environment which makes Carey such a great school to be a part of.

The support, the opportunities and the community here at Carey are all reasons why I love coming to school and know that when I finish Year 12, I will be ready for my next steps.
