Barker’s Junior School, from Pre-K to Year 6, is an environment where all children are encouraged, challenged and engaged in learning and cocurricular experiences appropriate to children of their age.
We aim to develop learners who are knowledgeable, caring, open-minded, balanced, principled, reflective, communicators, thinkers, risk-takers and inquirers. It is these 10 attributes that we believe are important in their learning journey.
In 2018, we welcomed girls into our Pre-K and Kindergarten classes, with girls entering Year 3 from 2019. Educating girls at Barker is not new for us. The Senior School has been educating girls since 1975 and we believe a coeducational school experience provides a safe environment in which young men and women can grow up together, learn to collaborate respectfully and appreciate the differing viewpoints that each brings.
By the end of 2018 construction will be complete on new Pre-K to Year 2 classrooms. This exciting development will bring the youngest members of the Barker community within the fold of the Junior School. Bringing all students from Pre-K to Year 6 together provides wonderful opportunities for improved pastoral care and student well-being. The building itself captures the essence of a future-focused teaching and learning space; light and open, with spaces for groups to collaborate and gather. It also allows greater access to the vast resources on the main campus. Flexible and engaging spaces will provide the Prep students with every opportunity to begin their Barker journey in an inspiring learning environment.
This is an exciting time to be considering a Barker education for your child. Our key entry points are Pre-K, Kindergarten, Year 3 and Year 5, though applications for other year groups will be considered where possible.
