Our Junior School from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6 aims to develop the whole child: the academic, the social, the physical and the spiritual. The learning environment affirms that all students have special abilities and talents from which a unique individual may emerge and evolve. Importantly, it is a community where pastoral care occupies a prominent place, one in which the building of relationships is a priority. Our differentiated teaching and learning programs, along with our highly qualified and experienced staff, ensure early identification of special abilities and needs.
When children are learning to read during the first three years of school, they need a great deal of assistance from teachers and parents to learn phonics, as it is a major contributor to success in mastering the mechanics of reading. In Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 in 2017, Barker have embarked on a new phonics program using a multi-sensory approach that includes actions, singing, dancing and puppets. It is child-centred and fun, as our youngest readers learn the 42 sounds that make up our alphabetic code.
In addition to the classroom experience, a broad co-curricular program provides many opportunities for the students to participate in robotics, swimming, tennis, taekwondo, chess, cooking, gardening, piano, choir and Crusaders.
