Student Profile

Name: Tor Kerver

Year Level: Class of 2010

Favourite Subject:

Early lessons in cultural and social pluralism fostered an international outlook and awareness which continues to shape my views and habits; in the decade since I graduated from Wesley, I have studied in two countries and worked in a further five. My undergraduate studies at Harvard University touched on a diverse range of subjects, from social theory to political economy. A year travelling through East and South East Asia as a freelance journalist was followed by a masters degree in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge. More recently, I returned to the United States to study law at Harvard Law School and I am currently enrolled in concurrent graduate programmes at Harvard and the University of Cambridge faculty of law.

Between studies, I worked for the Australian government at the United Nations, negotiating a number of humanitarian, development and macroeconomic resolutions in the 62nd UN General Assembly. My legal work has also taken me to the occupied Palestinian territories, where I worked with B'Tselem on human rights issues relating to the Israeli occupation, and to South Africa, where I worked with the Legal Resources Centre in Johannesburg. In 2009, I was a visiting fellow at the Universidad Javeriana faculty of law in Bogota, Colombia.

I am currently working in the Hague, the Netherlands, where I am assisting with Charles Taylor's defence in the Special Court for Sierra Leone. In the future, I hope to combine international legal practice with a career in academia. My research interests are in the areas of law (in particular critical approaches to international law), international relations, political economy, and international development. I have published articles in the areas of trade, taxation, politics and commercial law, and have written as an independent journalist on contemporary issues in Australia and Southeast Asia.
